Senator Cochran’s Resignation Opens Door For Chris McDaniel
Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi has announced his retirement from the Senate as of early Monday, effective on April 1st. For Liberty Republicans looking to gain another seat, this could not have come at a better time. State Senator Chris McDaniel, who lost to Senator Cochran 51%-49% in the Republican Primary Runoff in 2014, is now seriously weighing on switching from challenging other Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker to the newly opened seat.
State Senator Chris McDaniel, who is considered the anti-establishment pick for the senate race, has already built a very strong campaign that would make a re-nomination for Senator Wicker as hard as it was for Cochran if not a losing one. Often citing Senator Wicker’s votes on increasing the budget deficit and funding organizations such as Planned Parenthood, Chris McDaniel will hope that his campaign will appeal to voters who are tired of the Republican establishment walking back on their promises like eliminating deficit spending. But now that Senator Cochran’s seat is wide open for the taking, McDaniel would be well-advised to switch Senate races if he wants a smoother path towards a seat in the United States Senate.
During his interview with NBC regarding the idea of switching Senate races, McDaniel stated "It's a bit premature. In politics you keep all your options on the table ... never foreclose possibilities."
For the time being, Mississippi’s Governor Phil Bryant has up to ten days after Senator Cochran’s resignation goes into effect to appoint a temporary successor, who is most likely to be Tate Reeves, Bryant’s Lieutenant Governor and McDaniel’s would be the primary rival in the Special Election. With Cochran’s resignation, the Mississippi Election for his seat will be held on November 6th.
