Will Democrats Soon Openly Run On Reparations?
With the 2018 midterms on the horizon, Democrats have been adapting their platform to what will be politically expedient come this fall. Ever since the 2016 election, Democrats have been moving further and further to the left embracing people like Bernie Sanders, an admitted socialist. Now, Democrats have taken another yet another step to the left by advocating for free healthcare, free college, and even reparations. Reparations are payments given to someone or a group of people who have been wronged in the past. These theoretical reparations would be given to African-Americans.
Democrats like Maxine Waters (D-CA) have put reparations on their agenda. Democrats want to give reparations to black people because of slavery and Jim Crow laws. Democrats believe black people have not gotten over slavery or discrimination yet and need to be repaid for the wrongdoing of the United States. Even though of course, no one alive has ever lived under slavery. Also, Jim crow laws were abolished over 50 years ago.
Democrats also believe institutional racism is a valid excuse to hand out reparations to black people. Institutional racism no longer exists in America, as far as one could empirically measure such a thing. There are no laws that hold down black people. Black people being in poverty today is largely a result of personal agency. Today, more than 70 percent of African-American children are born out of wedlock. Also, black people account for the majority of crime in the United States. We do not have an institutional racism problem, The African-American Community has a crime and poverty problem.
Democrats running on reparations further shows how far to the left they have gone. On the other hand, Republicans have stayed stagnant on their beliefs.
