What The Iranian Protests Mean

Protesters In Iran

On Friday evening, President Trump tweeted, “Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime’s corruption & its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad. Iranian govt should respect their people’s rights, including right to express themselves. The world is watching! #Iran Protests”

In sharp contrast, then-President Obama’s first remark while demonstrators were bloodied and arrested in 2009 was "we respect Iranian sovereignty and want to avoid the United States being the issue inside of Iran." This sentiment of valuing the sovereignty of nations is rather selective, especially considering how much The United States national sovereignty had been degraded throughout the Obama/Bush years.

Obviously, there is a large segment of the Iranian people who are tired of their oppressive and corrupt government. The Iranian government has warned it’s people about what they call “illegal gatherings”. As a result, at least two Iranians were killed and five injured when a mob of people charged the Governor's office and were fired upon.

It is believed that the Iranian government has supported terrorist organizations for many years. Many Iranian government officials have been accused of providing funding, weapons, and training for terrorist forces. It is believed that political parties such as Hezbollah have been pushing for the Iranian government to aid terrorist organizations.

Along with being accused of aiding terrorists, the Iranian government has continued to make progress on its nuclear program against the interest of many nations. On July 14th, 2015 The “Joint Compromise Plan of Action”, or Iran Deal, was approved by the United Nations and Iran. The agreement slows down portions of Iran’s nuclear program while in return lifting sanctions from Iran’s economy. The Iranian people hoped that they would see a boost in their economy. Unfortunately, Iran’s economy is on the verge of collapsing. Also, it is believed that the Iranian government has continued to forward its nuclear program which violates the Iran Deal made with the United States.

In 2009 The Green Revolution started in Iran which demanded the removal of elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. President Mahmoud had been accused of sending millions to bank Melli to help Mohammad Reza Khavari who fled to Canada avoiding persecution. President Obama withheld support for the Green Revolution to curry favor with the government and get a nuclear deal.

Iran previously had a leader known as the Shah, who became the last Persian Monarch after he was exiled from his own nation in 1979. The current leadership under Iran is far less of a benevolent force than the Monarch was, and yet similar to the Democrat's policy towards Assad in Syria, under the Carter administration, the United States supported the rebels. Ever since then, Iran has been ruled by a radical Islamic theocracy.

Our foreign policy toward Iran under Trump is no longer one of accommodation or appeasement, but rather it is a Reaganesque peace through strength. It seems very likely at this point that President Trump will pull out of the Iran deal based on Iranian corruption and their lack of compliance. It appears President Trump has no problem with confrontation or brinksmanship. His moral support for an Iranian revolution represents a danger which threatens every totalitarian regime. It is long overdue for both the Iranian people and the world. If the people of Iran are able to free themselves of such brutal authoritarianism, they will shine as a beacon of hope to the world.
