Mexican Presidential Candidate Defends Migrants Coming to America
It was reported last week that a Mexican Presidential candidate had called upon Mexicans to flood the United States with a mass exodus, calling it a “human right”. According to a report from El Universal, candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) indicated that Mexicans should flee from Mexico and find a better life in the United States. It was originally reported that AMLO stated “And soon, very soon – after the victor of our movement – we will defend all the migrants in the American continent and all the migrants in the world,” AMLO stated while calling on people to “leave their towns and find a life in the United States”. This fleeing to the United States would be “a human right we will defend”.
However, it was reported yesterday that the statement was a hoax and took AMLO quote out of context. The original quote from the Mexican newspaper El Universal stated as follows: "Y ya pronto, muy pronto, al triunfo de nuestro movimiento vamos a defender a los migrantes de todo el continente Americano y todos los migrantes del mundo que, por necesidad, tienen que abandonar sus pueblos para buscar la vida en Estados Unidos, es un derecho humano que vamos a defender," El Universal quotes López Obrador saying in a speech on June 19. That translates to: "Soon, very soon, after the victory of our movement, we will defend migrants all over the American continent and the migrants of the world who, by necessity, must abandon their towns to find life in the United States; it’s a human right we will defend."
Politifact reported that AMLO did not tell anyone to flood the border, rather indicating he will defend those who find themselves with no other option but to relocate to the United States. He further urged current Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to complete the following three (3) actions: 1) Send a diplomatic note in protest of the Trump administration policies to the United States; 2) Solicit the urgent intervention of the United Nations commissioner for human rights; and; 3) Send a team of lawyers, psychologists and social workers to aid kids and their parents at the border.
The election stands less than two weeks away and AMLO is currently leading. He has run on a ticket opposing President Donald Trump’s policies toward Mexico. He has promised a nationalist government that will fight corruption and inequality. He has stated that he will push for constitutional amendments to change Mexico’s energy policy, eliminate immunity for government employees and allow for mechanisms of direct democracy, such as presidential referendums. AMLO has repeatedly compared himself to Mexican leaders such as Benito Juarez, Francisco Madero and Lazaro Cardenas which is the equivalent of an American candidate comparing himself to George Washington or Abraham Lincoln.
