UK Proposes 6 Year Prison Sentences for “Hate Speech”
Earlier this week the Sentencing Council of Wales and England proposed new legislation to affect freedom of association online, in attempt to target “hate criminals”. Although this is being masked by British representatives as a way to combat dangerous and “life-threatening” speech, it will affect those who communicate on prominent social media platforms. The language in the legislation drafts specifically says that the offenses which will be taken more seriously by this new legal measure include criticism of “religion”, “gender”, and “race”. The Sentencing Council has stated that these efforts are being conducted to mitigate the effects of the growing problem of “hate” on social media, and if convicted may punishments include prison sentences of up to six years.
Not only limited to social media, the Council also said that inappropriate publications on YouTube of “content inciting serious violence towards particular racial or religious groups, websites being published including abusive and insulting content, with some activity continuing over a long period of time and intended to reach global audiences” will be the object of oversight. All of this follows a recent conviction of a “hate” criminal in Scotland named Mark Meechan, who jokingly trained his girlfriend’s dog to respond to Nazi Germany references such as “gas the jews”. An intentionally humorous video of a pug saluting the Fuhrer of Germany was quickly pulled down after going viral, and immediately put into question the legal culpability of the videomaker.
Mark Meechan was found guilty of a hate crime, and narrowly avoided a prison sentence after paying a fine of over $1100. The remarks at his sentencing concluded that his material was “grossly offensive within Jewish communities in Scotland” and that he was complicit in “normalizing anti-Semitic attitudes and provoking further unpleasant anti-Semitic messages”.
The left in Europe is slowly turning into a sinister, and fascistic speech police that will now have the privilege of defining what is unacceptably offensive to a society. Needless to say, there are significant movements in the United States that are interested in accomplishing the same.
If England passes these “safety measures”, any criticism of Islam, Transgenderism, and radical social movements regarding race will be dismissed and thwarted under the deceptive guise of “public security”. Because it seems unlikely that English officials will have a problem with criticism of Christianity, this legal measure is obviously meant to target speech that is critical of those social entities that are under the protection and supervision of the social justice crowd.
