Wake Up Democrats

As an independent sick of the two-party system, I should revel in the failures of the republican and democratic parties, yet I don’t. Instead of the parties weakening, they’re sickeningly gaining more power by pandering to the worst parts of their base. I’m going to focus specifically on the Democrats because they control only 15 governorships and have a historic minority in the House of Representatives and a slim minority in the Senate. This is nothing particularly new as the Democrats haven’t held the congressional majority since 2014, but I’m going to throw you all a bone here. You’re losing badly and a right wing independent Trump supporter is here to tell you to shape up, constructive criticism rather than mudslinging.

Here’s your first problem, you’re running on old tactics, things that are so 2008. It’s like you’re stuck on Microsoft Office 2003 while everyone is already on Windows 10 and your epiphanies are about as useful. You’d already played identity politics in 2008 and 2012 and shamed all of us who didn’t vote for Obama. Unfortunately, you should’ve foresaw that the mudslinging wouldn’t hold for much longer as historic numbers of governorships and congressional seats were lost under President Obama. Couple that with the fact that Mitt Romney came close to winning the 2012 election and you should’ve realized that you were losing at your own game. Enter 2016, instead of putting up populist Bernie Sanders, you rig the primaries in favor of the darling of the establishment and 2008 primary runner-up, Hillary Clinton. She’s perfect, you all say; she’s got name recognition, she’s got experience, and she can play the woman card. Plus, you think, the idiots over on the right nominated Donald Trump. Cue leftist laughter. But then comes November 8th, 2016, and as you watch the returns, you aren’t laughing anymore, a guaranteed victory has become a resounding defeat. Donald Trump wins the presidency, you mouth in abject horror, while also watching a red wave take over Congress.

Your shock lasts all of three days and then you get an epiphany. Back in 2008, the republicans energized their base with the Tea Party, so you throw in Antifa. You’ve showed them, you think, until you realize that you still aren’t winning special elections. Gianforte tackles a reporter for God’s sake and your candidate still loses by six points and now, prominent incumbents are seeing their popularity slip as relative unknowns challenge them. What can we do? You wonder, then you remember, Ted Nugent insulted the president for shock value and you have a whole slew of celebrities doing the same thing! It’s perfect! Except now these liberal celebrities are receiving intense backlash and giving the republicans more fuel to stoke their base with.

You run through your checklist; the right stole your fake news terminology, they’re body slamming reporters and winning elections, Hillary’s election defeat thread is causing even more of a divide within your party, and your candidates aren’t doing so hot in red states unless you pump millions into their campaigns. That 2018 Blue Wave that was so hotly anticipated is rapidly fading away because, unbeknownst to you, the American public is tired of those tactics, you’re just emulating the right and it's embarrassing. That’s why conservative states passed laws to allow the running over of protesters who block traffic and why the democrats aren’t attracting new voters. The GOP was supposed to be the one dying and here you are limping on your last leg, attempting to win this race.

Alright, so what? I’ve pointed out all your flaws with some reasonable logic to back it up, now what? Well Democrats, I’m tired of RINOs like McCain and establishment neocons like Mitch McConnell, so I need you to put up a challenge. I’m playing Devil’s Advocate so to speak in an attempt to energize the American public, people over party, am I right? Anyway, first things first, stop recycling the Republican’s garbage, get two steps ahead. Don’t let Antifa be your Tea Party, disavow them and endorse a more moderate faction, allowing your reputation to regenerate. Secondly, stop putting up establishment candidates or candidates that allow you to use the infamous whatever card, be it race or gender, put out candidates who have a clean reputation and actually appeal to the demographic, whether that be blue-collar workers in Montana, or tech savvy students in Silicon Valley. Third, turn down the identity politics, it’s rather alienating and embarrassing. Fourth, stop mudslinging and painting everyone you disagree with as “Deplorable” or “fascist,” it ruins your credibility. Fifth, for the love of God, stop obstructing even when you agree with the policies. President Trump finally dragged the GOP back to the center on some issues that you’ve been championing for years and now you’ve become Mitch McConnell, cool it. Finally, if you want your Blue Wave, don’t just fill politics with cash, give the people an alternative, recognize serious issues and give a solution rather than just a contrarian response. Stop being a petulant child and you’ll start to win again. Otherwise, you’re about to have a sad eight years.
